BOSWELL GATES / DIVERSION DAM
The Boswell Dam was constructed to divert water from the Big Sioux River into Dry Lake and Lake Poinsett. The purpose of the diversion was to relieve downstream flooding during periods when the river reached flood stage using Dry Lake and Lake Poinsett as a reservoir for excess water. The Boswell gates were immobilized in October 2002 to prevent waters from the Big Sioux from entering.
